Our research revolves around low dimensional semiconductor materials from their synthesis to developing high performance components for electronics. Colloidal quantum dots and single-walled carbon nanotubes are studied as prototypical 0- and 1-dimensional systems. Efforts are made in synthesis (optimization of existing methods as well as developing new routes to novel hybrid nanostructures), chemical modification, assembly, and device fabrication to elucidate how chemistry influences electron transport, electron-phonon coupling, and optical transitions in low dimensional semiconductors. Current research focus is on how charges, both internal (e.g. charge carriers) and external (e.g. charges in the surrounding medium or intentionally introduced by chemical modification), influence electronic structure and therefore the electrical and the optical properties of these nanoscale materials. The effects of charges are probed at multiple length scales especially to elucidate how the properties of materials evolve as nanoscale objects are brought together to form complex architectures. For example, scaling of changes in the electron transport characteristics upon charge carrier injection by molecular adsorption on carbon nanotubes are studied from isolated individual nanotubes to 2-dimensional networks of varying dimensions. Several benefits are envisioned from such studies including an alternative route to molecular electronics where nanoscale components mediate and amplify responses of single molecules to high performance materials for nano and macroelectronics.
