Professor Geil received his BS from Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee, in 1952 and his PhD in physics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1957. Following periods at the E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Camille Dreyfuss Laboratory, and Case Western Reserve University, he joined the University of Illinois as professor in 1979. He is editor of the Journal of Macromolecular Science (Physics) and is a fellow of the American Physical Society. He received a Senior Faculty Fellowship from the Japan Society for Preservation of Science in 1988 and a Doctor h.c. from the Technical University of Brno, Czech Republic in 1999.
