Professor Cheng received a BS degree in chemistry from Nankai University, China, in 1993, a MS in chemistry from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1996 and a PhD in materials science from University of California, Santa Barbara in 2001. After working as a senior scientist at Insert Therapeutics, Inc. from 2001 to 2004, and as a research scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2004 to 2005, he joined the faculty of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at UIUC in 2005. He is the recipient of a Prostate Cancer Foundation Competitive Award (2007) and a NSF Career Award (2008).
