Oral Qualifying Exam on Solid State Transformations
Incomplete list of topics to be covered. Coverage is at the level of understanding typified by the suggested texts and courses, essentially at the senior undergraduate level for majors in Metallurgy, Ceramics or concentrating in metals or ceramics in Materials Science and Engineering. The principles should be understood as well as the application of principles to the case of metallic and ceramic materials.
Topics
- Diffusion in metals and ionic crystals
- Thermodynamics and equilibrium phase diagrams
- Nucleation
- Crystal interfaces and microstructure
- Solidification (and melting) of alloys
- Diffusional transformations
- TTT diagrams
- Eutectoid transformations, spinodal decomposition, precipitation hardened alloys
- Order-disorder alloys
- Martensitic transformations (shape memory alloys)
